I agree with Jessica Helfand's definition about graphic design. I completely agree with the fact that it is unifying color and light, scale and tension, and harmony and balance, but I am unsure of how politics, and other cues and puns come into play in the graphic design world. I guess she means that to be a part of the graphic design world, you need to become aware of your surroundings and what is occurring in your surroundings. This is what she must mean by cultural awareness. The section saying that graphic design can be explained mostly through the art itself is understandable. When you show your completed work to clients or friends, you expect them to understand or begin to understand what is going on inside your art. The art speaks for itself. When you are doing your project, you want to think, "Will this image or design explain itself?" If not, you need to express the meaning of your work harder. Internships are definitely helpful before looking for a full-time job. I recently worked for an internet marketing firm that also does logo design and web development. They enjoyed my participation in their company enough to ask me to come back after school is over with. I think what I want to do after I graduate is become a graphic designer in fields not involved with motion. I feel I will become more capable of expanding my skills with image and sound rather than animation and movement.
